Reflections on my oral presentation

I was pretty nervous for today's presentation. More so than usual. I think the pressure of having to display good presentation skills was pretty stressful. In most other presentations, the content is what matters, so I can practically read from the slides. However, this time, my heart was pounding when Charmian cued for me to go up and present.

It was therefore fortunate that I had rehearsed my part multiple times the night before, and even once that morning. Even then, there were still parts when I got stuck or said something differently than I intended.

I only really settled down near the end when the whole team did the 'strong arm' display and everyone laughed.

Aside from that, I'm satisfied with my performance. I really tried hard to vary my tone, since being monotonous is one of my main weaknesses. On reflection, it was all pretty fun! ;p

Hi Yi Han,

I really enjoyed your group's presentation that day, particularly the presentation slides, which is quite interesting with quite a lot of graphics to capture the audiences' attention. As for your part, I feel that you seemed quite calm (not like what you have described) as you took your time to convey the messages and paused at the correct places. I think you could have used more hand gestures to compliment your speech, perhaps it will be another alternative to compensate for your monotonous speaking as you have claimed. You can also try put in more stress on keywords to sound more convincing and passionate about your suggestions. In overall, I think that your speech always have a strong flow and clear structure, making it very comprehensive for audience. Good job and keep it up~

Hi Yi Han, thanks for your sharing.

I was impressed by the smart, young man I saw on the day of the oral presentation (OP). That was a great first impression, and needless to say, an important criterion in a successful presentation.

If you recall the statistics I shared with the class, you will remember that the total impact of a message comes from 7% words used, 38% tone of voice and 55% facial expressions, hand gestures, body position and other forms of non verbal communication. In other words, the moment you stand in front of the audience, within 20 seconds the audience would already have made an impression of you based on the clothing’s you wear, your general appearance and your body language. Hence, you can imagine the importance of leaving a great first impression, which I must say you had been largely successful in for your OP. Good job!

When you began your introduction, the next percentage, a large one at 38% will be formed based on your voice alone (and you still have not said anything substantial yet). So you will want to deliver an audible, lively, clear and crisp voice to entice your audience, to hook them for the entire duration of your presentation. This will be an aspect you will want to work on. I could tell that you were consciously making efforts to vary your tone so as to enliven your presentation; if you could work on the clarity of your voice, that would definitely make for a stronger presentation.

Besides being appropriately dressed, I could also see the efforts you put in to engage your audience. No doubt you knew what you wanted to share – that was very clear. I also saw conscious effort to gesture, to make good eye-contact with the audience, to use strategies to sustain their interest, and you succeeded to a large extent.

Your conclusion was memorable, and the invitation to the Q&A session sincere.
Thanks for the good effort put in this semester, Yi Han. All the best for your future presentations!

PS: I haven’t forgotten about asking you to share your conference experience, but I just couldn’t manage to find the time during class sessions. It will be great if you can share your experience here.
